{"id":92,"date":"2013-01-05T21:34:01","date_gmt":"2013-01-05T21:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/?page_id=92"},"modified":"2013-06-24T21:08:19","modified_gmt":"2013-06-25T02:08:19","slug":"peterpan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/?page_id=92","title":{"rendered":"Peter Pan Speech Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between October 2012 and June 2013, I intend to complete all 10 manual speeches in the Toastmaster International Competent Communicator Manual under a Peter Pan theme!<\/p>\n<p>Below is the title and description of each speech project.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve also included the date of\u00a0when it will be done (or when it was done).\u00a0 Click the title of any speech to see more details about the speech project, including the video if it has been completed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"Hello My Name is Peter\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project01\/\">Project #01: \u00a0<strong>Ice Breaker <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Hello, My Name is Peter<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED*****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rather than doing a speech about myself, I decided to do this speech as if I was Peter Pan giving his first manual speech!\u00a0 It was fun to pretend to be him, as I explained what life was like in Neverland, what it was like not growing up, and the conflicts he had with Captain Hook.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"The Story of Peter &amp; Wendy\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project02\/\">Project\u00a0#02:\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Organize Your Speech<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Peter &amp; Wendy, by JM Barrie in 5-7<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday, December 4, 2012 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I chose to tell the story of \u201cPeter of Wendy\u201d (later re-titled to \u201cPeter Pan\u201d) because any good story has a beginning, middle and end built right in.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t remember the story of Peter Pan, or if you need a quick refresher on the story, you can become reacquainted in about 15 minutes.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I failed at trying to condense it to a 5-7 minute timeframe!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"Bad Parenting &amp; The Lost Boys\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project03\/\">Project\u00a0#03:<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Get to the Point<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Bad Parenting &amp; Lost Boys: Is There a Correlation?<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday, December 18, 2012 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As described in the book \u201cPeter &amp; Wendy\u201d: \u201cWhen a boy falls out of his [crib] and is unclaimed by his parents, he is sent to Neverland.\u201d\u00a0 This has led me to believe that the Lost Boys are basically a gang of kids that had parents who did not love them.\u00a0 In this speech I point out the similarities between the Lost Boys and homeless children.\u00a0 At least the Lost Boys were lucky to have Neverland.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"Mermaids Demystified\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project04\/\">Project\u00a0#04: \u00a0<strong>How to Say It<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mermaids Demystified<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday, January 15, 2013 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What do we really know about mermaids?\u00a0 The top half is a human female, and the bottom half is a fish.\u00a0 Other than that, most people don\u2019t know much more.\u00a0 Are they really friendly?\u00a0 What about mermen \u2013 do they exist?\u00a0 Are they real or mythological? Check out this video to learn all about mermaids!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"The Trouble with Women in Neverland\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project05\/\">Project\u00a0#05: \u00a0<strong>Your Body Speaks<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Trouble with Women in Neverland<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday, February 19, 2013 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED*****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The story of Peter Pan only mentions of these women in Neverland: Tinker<br \/>\nBell, Wendy, Tiger Lily, and the mermaids. Obviously this island is<br \/>\nvery male dominated, and feminists have expressed this inequality with<br \/>\ndissatisfaction. Have the feminists ever given credit to any men for<br \/>\ntrying to make the world a better place? How come men don\u2019t seem to want<br \/>\nto grow up? This video takes a light hearted look at the \u201creal\u201d gender<br \/>\nissues in Neverland, with Don explaining the trouble with women in<br \/>\nNeverland, and BJ Olsen explaining the trouble with men in Neverland.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"Hook &amp; Steve Irwin\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project06\/\">Project\u00a0#06: \u00a0<strong>Vocal Variety<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hook and Steve Irwin: Surviving Crocodiles<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday,\u00a0 March 19, 2013 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Peter Pan cut off Captain Hook\u2019s hand and fed it to a crocodile.\u00a0 The crocodile has been looking for rest of Captain Hook ever since.\u00a0 Steve Irwin, the late host of \u201cThe Crocodile Hunter\u201d was an Australian conservationist who was very knowledgeable about crocodiles.\u00a0 What advice would Mr Irwin have given to Captain Hook?\u00a0 The speech contains a lot of information about crocodiles and is presented in a very entertaining manner.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"108 Years of Peter Pan\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project07\/\">Project\u00a0#07: \u00a0<strong>Research Your Topic<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<\/a><em><a title=\"108 Years of Peter Pan\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project07\/\">&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">108 Years of Peter Pan<\/span>&#8220;<\/a><\/em><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Thursday, January 10, 2013 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Peter Pan first came out as play on Dec 27, 1904.\u00a0 The legacy of Peter Pan has grown worldwide!\u00a0 Researching the history of Peter Pan was enjoyable, and speaking about it was even more fun.\u00a0 Watch the video to learn where the idea of Peter Pan came from, who the author was, and who really owns the rights to Peter Pan to this day (it\u2019s not Disney).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"TinkerBell\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project08\/\">Project\u00a0#08: \u00a0<strong>Visual Aids<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Tinker Bell-The Fabulous Fantastic Famous Fairy<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday, April 16, 2013 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fairies are mentioned in a lot of literary works.\u00a0 If you ask people to name one fairy, a name often mentioned is \u201cTinker Bell\u201d.\u00a0 She is that popular!\u00a0 This speech will tell you everything you want to know about Tinker Bell: How she got her name, who the model was for the Disney animation, and other interesting facts about Tinker Bell.\u00a0 For visual aids, my friend Kristine Campbell let me showcase her collection of Tinker Bell artwork.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"Join Captain Hook\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project09\/\">Project\u00a0#09: \u00a0<strong>Persuade with Power<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Join Captain Hook&#8217;s Navy Now<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday, May 21, 2013\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the book &#8220;Peter and Wendy&#8221; (better known as &#8220;Peter Pan&#8221;), Captain Hook tried unsuccessfully to encourage the\u00a0Lost Boys to join his crew.\u00a0 He threatened the boys by giving them a choice:\u00a0Join Captain Hook, or walk the plank!\u00a0\u00a0When the boys\u00a0decided to\u00a0walk the plank, all I could think is how poor Captain Hook&#8217;s\u00a0persuasion skills are.\u00a0 In this speech, I use the softer skills of selling.\u00a0 No threats!\u00a0\u00a0Well, maybe only if the grammar is poor!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a title=\"Never Grow Up\" href=\"https:\/\/meetdon.com\/publicspeaking\/peterpan\/project10\/\">Project\u00a0#10: \u00a0<strong>Inspire Your Audience<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<em>&#8220;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Why I&#8217;ll Never Grow Up and Why You Shouldn&#8217;t Either<\/span>&#8220;<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nDATE:\u00a0 Tuesday, June 4, 2013 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">****COMPLETED****<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dave Barry, columnist and humorist, said it best when he said, &#8220;You may be only young once, but you can always be immature!&#8221;
