Hook & Steve Irwin

Completed Date:  Tuesday, March 19, 2013
Host Club: Tale Weavers

Peter Pan cut off Captain Hook’s hand and fed it to a crocodile.  The crocodile has been looking for rest of Captain Hook ever since.  Steve Irwin, the late host of “The Crocodile Hunter” was an Australian conservationist who was very knowledgeable about crocodiles.  What advice would Mr Irwin have given to Captain Hook?  The speech contains a lot of information about crocodiles and is presented in a very entertaining manner.

About Project #06 – Vocal Variety

How speakers use their voices have more to do with the success of the speech than how well written the speech is.  The objective of the vocal variety speech is to focus on improving the quality of the speech by using a variety of voice controls:  volume, pitch, rate, and pauses.  Each voice control affects the audience’s ability to understand and feel the emotions that are being communicated.

Specifics –

Word of Day: Ostentatious
Speech Time Limit: 5-7 Minutes
Actual Speech time: 6:00

Evaluation Notes –

This was one of Don Bailey’s favorite Peter Pan series speeches so far.  He liked the opening, many of the word descriptions, and the ryhme at the end.  The speech had good vocal variety, and good use of natural pauses.

For improvement on this speech, he would have liked to see the use of Steve Irwin’s most famous word: “Crikey!”  It would have made a difference!

Personal Comments –

I collected a lot of data on crocodiles, and I needed a way to unload all of it without looking like I was just listing a bunch of facts.  I “story bundled” them.  For example, my first point was that crocodiles are lazy hunters.  I prefaced that by denoting Captain Hook’s belief that he was being hunted.  From there, I unloaded a lot of incredible facts about crocodiles that related to their hunting abilties, and then later showed the facts that explain how they are lazy hunters.  Therefore, the facts never seem like a long list.

Also, I have never eaten bald eagle!  Now you don’t need to be inclined to ask!
