Hello, My Name is Peter!

Completion Date: Tuesday, October 16, 2012
Host Club: Tale Weavers

Rather than doing a speech about myself, I decided to do this speech as if I was Peter Pan giving his first manual speech!  It was fun to pretend to be him, as I explained what life was like in Neverland, what it was like not growing up, and the conflicts he had with Captain Hook.

About Project #01 – Ice Breaker

The objective of this speech project is to just get a person up and speaking in front of an audience.  To make it easy for a person to get up and do it, this project is based on a subject that everyone knows well: themselves!  It’s very common for people to say that they couldn’t make it to 4 minutes talking about themselves; only to find out they exceed 6 minutes!

Specifics –

Word of Day:  Draggle
Speech Time Limit: 4-6 Minutes
Actual Speech time: 4:33

Evaluation Notes –

Dave found the speech to be enjoyable, in character, and believable.  A few points of improvement are:

  • The handling of the notes could have been smoother. There is nothing wrong with using notes, just that the plan for using them could have been improved.
  • The speech could have used a little more energy to add excitement and be more kid-like.
  • Better to use the vernacular of the 1904 time period. The modern slang just did not fit well.

Personal Comments –

I certainly agree with the evaluation.  After reviewing the speech myself, I noticed that I used a lot of slang, even though I intended not to use any.  In fact, there were a few points I meant to make that were in my notes, but forgot to mention them in the speech.

Two big errors I noticed were:

  1. I called it “Never Never Land”, instead of “Neverland”.
  2. The directions to Neverland are “2nd star to the right, straight on till MORNING” – not midnight.  If you stop at midnight, like I suggested, you would still be walking distance from your home.
